The Tom Barry Memorial Tournament
Thomas (Tom) Barry was appointed Head PGA Professional at Lakeside Park Club (formerly Jefferson Lakeside Country Club) in 1983 where he proudly served until his retirement in 2019. Tom worked part time with Lakeside Park Club until his death on January 18, 2025, assisting with golf operations and was affectionately known as the "go-to guy" for rulings.
Always the consummate gentleman, Tom was also the Pro who always remembered a name. He would meet a new member once and that was all it took for him to call you by name at your next meeting.
Tom's father introduced him to golf at age 9, which sparked his passion. By the age of 13, he officially joined the caddie ranks at Cherry Hills, marking the start of his lifelong journey in golf. Under the mentorship of David Ogilvie III, Head PGA Professional at Flossmoor Country Club, Tom decided to dedicate his career to golf. He was elected to PGA membership in 1979 and accepted his first Head Professional position in 1981 at Oregon Golf Club in Oregon, IL.
Tom's love for the game extended far beyond the course. He sponsored and conducted seminars and programs on various aspects of golf. A professional instructor and a trusted rules official, Tom was often sought after for his deep knowledge of the Rules of Golf.
Tom's dedication earned him several awards and accolades, including induction into the Mid-Atlantic PGA Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) Hall of Fame in 2023.
Tom’s steadfast commitment to the sport and its promotion leaves an indelible mark on the golf community. Tom is survived by his wife, Michelle “Mickey” Hoffman, of 36 years, who was the center of his world and anchor.
